JAY — A 15-year-old Jay boy is facing several felony charges, including two counts of attempted murder, following a Sunday morning incident that left his father injured with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office identified the shooter as Jackson Shane Baxley, and his injured father as David Baxley. David Baxley was taken to Sacred Heart Emergency Room Trauma Center and, following “multiple emergency surgeries,” is expected to survive, a news release from the Sheriff’s Office said.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Jackson Baxley was charged with attempted arson and making a firebomb “against his parents,” an arrest report said.

The report indicates Jackson Baxley and his girlfriend had been punished for sending “inappropriate messages to each other on their cellphones.” The two had been ordered not to date or talk to one another, the report said, but continued to do so.

The heavily redacted arrest report does not provide clear information about how the firebomb was constructed or even what Jackson intended to do to commit arson. It states that on Aug. 19, Jackson Baxley entered his parents’ home, possibly with a coffee can, and set a shotgun shell on furniture just outside the door of the bedroom they occupied.

Candace Baxley, identified in the report as Jackson’s mother, awoke to find her son in the family’s kitchen “wearing a hoodie and a cotton mask around his face.”

“Jackson continued to stare at Candace with no expression on his face. Jackson wasn’t responding to questions from Candace. Candace called for David. David pushed passed Candace and walked towards the kitchen where Jackson was now standing, armed with the shotgun,” the report said.

As David Baxley attempted to remove the shotgun from Jackson’s grip, Jackson, whose finger was on the trigger, fired the weapon, the report said. David Baxley was struck in the left thigh.

When deputies arrived, Jackson Baxley ran out the back door of the home and officers used a stun gun him to subdue him, the report said. His effort to flee resulted in his being charged with resisting arrest without violence.
