MILTON — Main Street Milton has recently experienced some changes with the hiring of a new executive director and event coordinator.

While Main Street's operating budget does not come solely from city funding, the city does allocate funds to the organization.

At the Feb. 13 council meeting, the city approved $125,000 in support of Main Street Milton. At the July 10 city council meeting, Main Street requested approximately $216,000, according to Main Street Milton executive director Edward Spears.

According to the budget breakdown, approximately $132,000 would be for the salaries and health benefits of the executive director and event coordinator, which was not included in the original request. The report also says they are requesting $10,000 for building and video security upgrades.

Spears said the building the organization uses, which they share with the Milton Garden Club, is in need of some improvements such as replacing kitchen equipment and flooring.

"Our number one project would be the video surveillance system," Spears said.

Spears was selected as the new director of Main Street in May, following the death of former president of Main Street, Sammy Carroll.

Main Street was formed in 2001 with the mission to preserve and promote Milton through a collaborative focus on economic development, historical and architectural preservation according to the organization’s website.

The city council will be voting on the Main Street Budget at the August 6 council meeting. The meeting starts at 5:30  p.m. and is open to the public.
