MILTON — If you travel San Juan Street, North 15th Avenue, or South 26th Avenue expect smoother driving in the near future thanks to the county's paving work.
The total amount for the repaving of the roads will cost $129,000. The county has received a grant of $75,000 from the Northwest Florida Water Management District.
“I’d like to thank the water district for upping that ante from $10,000, where we started, to $75,000,” Commissioner Bob Cole said. “It’s going to go a long way to helping elevate some of the silt that we’re getting in our estuaries.
Public Works Director Stephen Furman said there is a timeframe to complete the paving of the roads that the county will work toward.
“I believe it is 12 months from when it’s all signed and sealed,” Furman said. “We are hoping to do it before the end of this summer.”
The Avalon Beach area along Indian Bayou and Escambia Bay contains several miles of dirt roads, including these streets, that are county-maintained.
According to a report from Northwest Florida Water Management District, starting in 2016 increased sedimentation into the bayou was reported. The District reported unpaved roads were a contributing factor.
