PACE — Sacred Heart Medical Park in Pace now offers three-dimensional imaging of the breast to provide women with better technology that can help physicians detect breast cancer earlier and with even greater accuracy. Earlier detection of breast cancer increases one’s chances of survival.
Sacred Heart is part of Ascension, the nation’s largest, non-profit health system.
Manufactured by Hologic, the 3D mammography exam produces results that are more accurate than conventional two-dimensional mammograms, detecting 20 percent to 65 percent more invasive breast cancers. It takes about the same amount of time as a two-dimensional exam, and it is the only mammogram that the FDA has approved as superior for women with dense breasts.
This is especially good news for women who have been diagnosed with dense breasts as three-dimensional imaging captures the fine details in dense breasts that may not be visible in a two-dimensional image. Nearly 50 percent of women between the ages of 40 and 74 have dense breasts, putting them at greater risk of developing breast cancer. 3D imaging allows the physician to examine breast tissue layer by layer versus studying a flat image produced by conventional technology.
“The 3D exam is more accurate for women of all ages, with both dense and non-dense breasts,” said Kerrie Sessions, director of diagnostic services at Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola. “It also helps reduce unnecessary callbacks for further screenings.”
