Dear editor,
As most of you know, May was Military Appreciation month. The third Saturday in May is Armed Forces Day.
Every year, the Veterans Of Foreign Wars, John O'Connor Post 4833 has held their "Honor Your Vet" Golf Tournament and on May 19 we had our 11th annual tournament. This tournament was established to dedicate all the profits towards helping our local Veterans, Veterans's Families and a percentage going into a memorial fund.
My purpose of this letter is to thank all the local businesses who donated over the past 11 years to make this tournament possible. Without you, it could not happen. There isn't enough room in this letter for me to name them all….I think you know who you are and so do all the members of our post.
However, I do need to mention the following. Tanglewood Golf Club has hosted our tournament 10 of the 11 years. J.J.,the manager and professional, and his staff do a remarkable job getting the course ready for us to play. Also Lewis Bear, Buffalo Rock and (Goldring Gulf Distributing) companies have provided us with most of the beverages we give our players each year and Food Outlet of Milton gave us 140 pounds of chicken to barbecue. I wish I had room to thank you all.
Also, I would like to thank all of our players. The first year we had this tournament we had 17 teams of 68 players. This year we had 25 teams of 100 players…actually 27, but two had to back out. We have had as many as 31 teams but could not put them all out on the course. Thank you guys for supporting us each year.
Last but not least are all the volunteers who put in a lot of hours and sacrifice to make this tournament possible. Again, I wish I had room to name you all. We at the "V" know who you are. But I do l have to mention my co-chairman, Jackie Johnson. Jackie works full time but still finds the time to make a big difference in the success of this tournament.
Our Commander, Mike Messer and myself would like to extend an invitation to all to come visit our post. You may find it is a lot more than a bunch of "old veterans" sitting around telling war stories. We are open to the public. We look forward to seeing you.
Thank You.
STAN ABRAMS, Golf Chairman
