MILTON — The city of Milton May 3 partook in the National Day of Prayer on the county courthouse lawn. The theme this year was unity.

The service took place on the law of the Santa Rosa County Courthouse in Milton. Prayers were given for the nation as well as for families, business, military, government, churches, media and education.

Speaking at the event were Sherriff Bob Johnson, Reverend William Wright, Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Bob Cole, Pastor Jonathon Russell, Lieutenant Roy Fondren, Reverend James Cook, Pastor Mike Brown, and Pastor Jim Lassiter.

Since the first national call to prayer by President George Washington in 1789, there have been over 146 such calls for prayer, fasting, and thanksgiving by presidents. President Harry Truman in 1952 signed the joint resolution into law officially creating the National Day of Prayer.
