MILTON — The Three Rivers Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented their annual Good Citizen Award to three local high school students.
The winners were Madison Morgan of Milton High School, Alexondria Fay of Century High School and Timothy Locklin of Jay High School. Locklin was the first-place winner and his entry will be forwarded to the Florida State Society DAR for consideration at the state level.
Students must submit a copy of their transcript, a personal statement, their resume and an essay to be considered for the award. The students don’t know the essay topic until they come to write it, and they don’t have access to outside resources during the writing time.
This year’s essay topic was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It." The focus question was “How has America advanced the cause of freedom in the rest of the world?”
Each of the winning students have maintained a grade point average of more than 4.0. They are also involved in school and community volunteer activities and have set goals for college and their futures.
“Their families, their schools, and their communities should be very proud of these outstanding young citizens,” the press release said.
The DAR Good Citizens Committee was created by a resolution of the Continental Congress of 1934, according to a press release. The committee’s purpose is to recognize and reward high school seniors who best exemplify the qualities of a good citizen: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
The Three Rivers Chapter of DAR is one of 3,000 National Society chapters across the world. The purpose of the organization is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. The members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War.
