PACE — When two Pace High School teachers were in need, the PHS Student Government Association stepped up to help.

Coach Brad Filbert and his wife, parents to two young boys already, had a third child, a baby girl born in December. She has been in the neonatal intensive care unit since then, and the parents need to meet their $10,000 deductible since the new year started.

“We don’t know the name of [the illness] or what it is really. They’re still running tests,” SGA faculty advisor Claudia Cassevah said. “It’s just really sad.”

After brainstorming ways to help, SGA members decided to host a volleyball and basketball tournament and fish fry. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 21 at the Clubhouse All Sports Training Facility on West Spencer Field Road in Pace.

“We are hoping to raise $10,000 on that Saturday,” Cassevah said.

The recently-opened training facility donated their space to the organization free of charge, and they are helping advertise for the event. The fundraiser will include a six-on-six volleyball tournament and three-on-three basketball tournament. The cost to play is $5 per person, and $2 for spectators.

Teachers will prepare fish and other food at the high school’s cafeteria and transport it to the Clubhouse for guests to purchase for $10 per plate. Those wanting to only purchase food and not attend the sports games can come straight to the high school cafeteria, Cassevah said.

There will be plenty of activities for children at the event including music, spikeball, a bounce house, face painting, games and cornhole, according Cassevah. SGA chairs Noah Smith, Ansley Ezekiel and Carley Rogers are organizing the event.

An account is set up at Pen Air Federal Credit Union under the name Maggie Filbert for those who want to make donations. Donations will also be accepted at the event, and all proceeds will be put in the account for the family’s medical expenses.

People wanting to participate in the tournaments can sign up at the Clubhouse or online at www.eventbrite.com/e/maggies-miracles-tickets-44261201445.
