Catching up with Pace's all-star soccer players

Editor’s note: This continues our series on Santa Rosa County’s student athletes selected for the 2018 Subway High School All-Star Soccer Team.

PACE — Haley Bartell, Casey Siders, Michael Wimmer and Gatlin Lowe of Pace High School are among the 22 athletes in Santa Rosa County selected to join the 2018 Subway High School All-Star Soccer team.

The Subway High School All-Star Series is a sequence of games between high school senior athletes from Okaloosa, Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The main soccer game took place 5 p.m. March 1 at Gulf Breeze High School. The East girl's team (Choctaw, Crestview, Fort Walton Breach, Gulf Breeze, Milton, Navarre, Niceville, Pace and Rocky Bayou) beat the West girl's team (Catholic, Pensacola, Escambia, Pine Forrest, Tate, Washington and West Florida Tech) 9-1. The East boy's team beat the West boy's team 1-0.

Here, we catch up with the Pace High seniors on making the all-star team, their everyday lives and their aspirations.

How long have you been playing soccer?

HB: For 7 years.

CS: I have been playing soccer since I was 4.

MW: I've been playing soccer as long as I can remember, and was on my first team at 3.

GL: About 4 years.

What’s the best part of soccer?

HB: Playing a sport you love not only with your teammates but with your best friends.

CS: My favorite part is playing in the games.

MW: The thing I probably like most about soccer is that your stress and life problems fade away when you're on the field.

GL: Having fun with my brothers.

What’s the worst part of soccer?

HB: Playing in cold weather.

CS: My least favorite is conditioning at practice.

MW: I really have no least favorite part; it takes hard work and that's not something you want to do, but its part of the process, so you live it and embrace it.

GL: There’s nothing I didn't like about soccer.

What is your favorite soccer experience?

HB: All the laughs and jokes we have.

CS: My favorite experience is when I scored two free kick goals against Navarre on their senior night.

MW: My favorite experiences playing for Pace are probably more on the bonds we've made between each other and the experiences we've had, rather than the actual soccer.

GL: My favorite experience was beating Navarre on senior night and when Casey scored his free kick that night.

What are your hobbies outside of soccer?

HB: Reading, watching movies, [I am] a part of my church's youth group, and spending time outside.

CS: I enjoy fishing, going to the beach and hanging out with friends.

MW: Outside of soccer, I like music a lot, but mostly I just like to be with my close friends and get to understand them and their life perspective better.

GL: [My] hobbies outside of soccer are working on my truck and playing video games.

What are your college plans?

HB: I plan on attending Freed-Hardeman University.

CS: I haven't decided where I am going yet, but Mississippi State University is my leading choice right now.

MW: I do plan on going to college, but I don't know where or for what quite yet

GL: [I’m going to] Florida State University.

What do you want to do as a career?

HB: I plan on majoring in exercise science.

CS: I want to major in pre-pharmacy to become a pharmacist.

MW: I'd like to have a career in professional soccer.

GL: I want to major in information technology.

What is your favorite television show?

HB: Anything on Food Network.

CS: My favorite TV show is “Impractical Jokers.”

MW: I really don't have a favorite TV show, maybe "American Idol."

GL: “Supernatural”

What is your favorite band or musician?

HB: My favorite kind of music is pop and R&B.

CS: My favorite artist is Drake.

MW: My favorite band is probably Arctic Monkeys, but I listen to rap a lot and really understand some rap artists.

GL: Fox Stevenson and House.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

HB: If I could have any super power, I would have super speed; I can get to places without being late all the time.

CS: I would want to know everything as a super power so I could cure cancer and solve the world's problems.

MW: If I could have one super power it would most likely be to read minds or fly. Read minds just because people can be so hard to understand sometimes, and flying because it would be nice to be able to escape from everyone and think alone.

GL: My super power would be to fly, because that would be awesome.
