Scammer poses as Santa Rosa sheriff’s office

“We want to remind citizens, the sheriff’s office does not solicit funds over the telephone,” the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

MILTON — A Feb. 5 incident used a twist on a familiar scam, according to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office.

An unsolicited phone call took place in which the victim learned there was a warrant for their arrest due to non-compliance related to a jury-duty summons. The caller had credible information such as the victim’s name, address and phone number.

The caller said he was Officer Miller with the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office and needed $18,000 for bond. He told the victim to obtain Dollar Store gift cards and to remain on the phone the entire time. He also said to meet at the sheriffs office.

This victim felt uncomfortable, discontinued the call and contacted the sheriff’s office.

"We want to remind citizens, the sheriff’s office does not solicit funds over the telephone," the SRCSO said in a statement. "Never pay anyone over the telephone unless you first verify the information yourself.

"If in doubt, contact the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office directly at 850-983-1100."
