Artist sets flower-painting workshop

MILTON — The Santa Rosa Art Association will meet 9 a.m. Jan. 27 at the Pensacola State Campus, Building 4900. Guest artist Patsy Pennington will demonstrate how to make a white flower appear whiter in watercolor or acrylic.

All members and guests should bring regular watercolor or acrylic supplies for hands-on participation. Members should bring a 1/4 sheet (11-by-15-inch) of watercolor paper with a white flower drawn in pencil on the paper.

Pennington is an award-winning artist, illustrator and teacher. She has illustrated four pocket books for Peter Pauper Press including "Friends Make the Difference," "Gifts of Friendship," "Friends Make the Best Presents" and "Teachers Make the Difference."

Over 30 years, Pennington has taught hundreds of students about the spontaneity of watercolor in workshops and with the release of her "Wet on Wet" video. Her work is not photorealistic — it leaves much to the viewer’s imagination. Her semi-abstract subject is often drawn from nature. Pennington enjoys the transparency and lack of control experienced with watercolor and encourages students to paint with a kaleidoscope in mind.

Pennington is a member of Pensacola Artists Inc. and The Pensacola Art Study Club, and she shows her work throughout the United States.

SRAA dues for the year — from August to May — are $30. The SRAA meets on the fourth Saturday of the month with the remaining schedule as follows:

  • February: oil painter Theresa Grillo Laurd
  • March: pastel artist Tommy Vogel
  • April: acrylic artist Fuller Brown
