Event to feature free legal, social and government services
PENSACOLA — The One Stop Life Shop will feature more than 20 organizations that provide free legal, social and government services for community members who need assistance.
The event is set Jan. 17, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Morris Eaddy Activity Center, 1110 W. Lakeview Ave., Pensacola. Walk-ins are welcome.
Organizations signed up to provide assistance include: Pathways for Change; Legal Services of North Florida; Catholic Charities; CareerSource Escarosa; EscaRosa Financial Literacy Resources; Emerald Coast Legal Aid; Pensacola State College; Goodwill Easter Seals; Florida Department of Health, Escambia County; Escambia Community Clinic; VA Gulf Coast Veterans Health System; 90 Works; Hospitality Freight Transport Career Classes from Doorknob Books; United Way 2-1-1; Waterfront Mission; The Fellows Foundation of Pensacola State College; Healthy Start; and ECAT and Department of Children & Families
One Stop Life Shop brings multiple providers together in one location, at one designated time, to make it easy for people in need to access social services, legal assistance and government programming.
Sacred Heart sets free heart-health screenings
MILTON — During January, Sacred Heart Health System will provide free heart-health screenings at locations in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties for adults who are poor, elderly or uninsured.
Here is the schedule:
•Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Morris Eaddy Activity Center, 1110 W. Lakeview Ave., Pensacola
•Jan. 24 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Cobb Community Center, 601 E. Mallory St., Pensacola
•Jan. 25 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Victory Assembly of God, 1895 Victory Road, Cantonment
•Jan. 27 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at West Milton Church of Christ, 5300 U.S. Highway 90, Pace
•Jan. 30 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, 100 Daniel St., Gulf Breeze
Heart-health screenings measure blood pressure, blood sugar and total cholesterol, and can detect anemia.
The screenings are helpful in diagnosing conditions that put people at high risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other health problems.

Navarre Garden Club sets environmental program
NAVARRE — The Navarre Garden Club will present "Holiday Habitat for your Backyard," an environmental program with guest speaker and Okaloosa Master Gardener Richard Hickenbotham.
The program begins 10 a.m. Jan. 18 at the Navarre Elks Club, 2002 Elks Way (behind the Shrimp Basket) in Navarre.
Attendees can learn about providing water for birds and butterflies; plants that provide food for birds and butterflies; and trees and shrubs that provide shelter from storms and food for wildlife.
Light refreshments will be served. A ways and means table will have supplies available to purchase.

UWF meeting to focus on race, privilege
PENSACOLA — Race & Reconciliation’s next meeting will focus on "Unpacking Privilege; Reading between the Lines of Black and White." The event is set 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18 in the Earl J. Bowden Building located at 120 Church St, Pensacola.
This is the second in a series of three panel discussions sponsored by Race and Reconciliation in conjunction with Stronger Together Northwest Florida.
"In this hands-on workshop we will define privilege and why it matters," an event media release states. "This series of programs is facilitated by the local grassroots organization Stronger Together Northwest Florida, whose mission is to ‘…advocate for and amplify the voices among us who have been historically oppressed.’
Race and Reconciliation is sponsored by the University of West Florida’s Department of Social Work.

Navarre Park restrooms to re-open
NAVARRE — The Navarre Park restroom facility, located on the west end of the park, will re-open soon following replacement.
Closures are scheduled to end Jan. 19 at the 8513 Navarre Parkway location.
Additional restrooms in the Santa Rosa County Visitor Information Center will be available to park visitors.
Fort Pickens sets ‘Leave No Trace’ workshops
GULF BREEZE — Gulf Islands National Seashore will welcome Subaru / Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers and Ocean Hour for a day of learning about outdoor ethics and citizen science.
The event will take place 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20 in the Fort Pickens area. It will include workshops and presentations on outdoor ethics and a beach cleanup.
Information booths will be set up at the Fort Pickens Discovery Center (formally known as the museum). Outdoor enthusiasts will learn the latest techniques and practices, along with tools and tips for teaching Leave No Trace to friends and family. Ocean Hour will lead a beach clean-up. Subaru / Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers will use games and other activities to teach kids how they can embrace the effort.
Throughout the day, tables and booths in the auditorium of the Fort Pickens Discovery Center will offer information about citizen science, outdoor ethics and community engagement. Park rangers will present games and activities for kids to earn their Junior Ranger Badge.
Eastern National, a not-for-profit cooperating association that runs the Fort Pickens Bookstore, will offer discounts to event participants. Discounts apply for reusable items to help guests reduce their footprint on the outdoor world.
Open Gaetz Day tour comes to Cantonment
PENSACOLA — Congressman Matt Gaetz will host a full day of events Jan. 22 in the Cantonment and Ensley areas for "Open Gaetz Day."
The congressman will start the day by visiting Tate High School, where he will meet with students, teachers and parents. Afterward, Gaetz will have one-one-one meetings with constituents during mobile office hours at Pen-Air Federal Credit Union, 1495 E. 9 Mile Road.
Gaetz will attend a variety of other events that day, which include a visit to Ascend Performance Materials, and a visit to the Home Depot on West Nine Mile Road. In the afternoon, Gaetz will visit with community residents in Cantonment and Ensley.
Constituents are invited to a 6:30 p.m. town hall meeting at Navy Federal Credit Union in the GPO Auditorium on Heritage Oaks Drive. The congressman will be available to take questions and hear from constituents.
His staff will also be available to assist any constituents who may be experiencing an issue with a federal agency.
‘Drones in Real Estate’ presentation set for Realtors, developers
PENSACOLA — The Escambia Santa Rosa Real Estate Council wants Realtors to understand the legal aspects they and developers should know when using drones in real estate marketing.
"Drones in Real Estate," a discussion, is set 1:30-4 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center, 913 S. I St., Pensacola. Richard J. Henry, a safety team program manager with the Federal Aviation Administration; Michael J. Schofield, Esq., a board-certified aviation attorney with Clark Partington; and Rick Simpson with HoverCheck Drone Imaging will be the experts in attendance.
The event, which helps Realtors and developers learn how drone use can help sell their clients' properties while staying in compliance with the regulations, includes a live drone presentation and is free for Realtors and developers to attend.

Santa Rosa Teacher of the Year to be named
The Santa Rosa Education Foundation has selected five semifinalists from 33 nominees for Santa Rosa Teacher of the Year.
They are April Ballard, S.S. Dixon Intermediate; Erin Cosky, Gulf Breeze High; Mark Sargent, Santa Rosa High; Christina Andrus, West Navarre Primary; and Joshua Odom, Woodlawn Beach Middle.
The SREF Teacher of the Year Selection Committee — which comprises administrators, business and community leaders, parents, and previous Santa Rosa Teachers of the Year — will observe the semifinalists in their classrooms and conduct interviews before selecting three finalists.
The Santa Rosa Teacher of the Year will be announced Wednesday, Jan. 24. All nominees will be recognized March 2 at Santa Rosa’s Golden Apple Awards celebrating all Santa Rosa teachers.

Santa Rosa County 4-H sets quilting workshops
MILTON — Santa Rosa County 4-H will offer a "Past, Present & Future 4-H Quilting Class" workshop series for current, former or prospective 4-Hers as well as adults.
The series, in partnership with the Home & Community Educator volunteers, will teach the basics of quilting and prepare students for quilting projects. The cost is $10 per class ($40 total).
Here is the schedule:
•Feb. 10, 2018 (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) — cutting the quilt
•March 10, 2018 (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) — sewing it up
•April 14, 2018 (9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) — putting it all together
All classes are held at the Santa Rosa County Extension Office, 6263 Dogwood Drive in Milton.

Business offering $55K in scholarships for high school seniors
GULF BREEZE — Mediacom Communications is offering $55,000 in scholarships to support high school seniors planning to further their education. In its 17th consecutive year, the company's scholarship program will award $1,000 World Class Scholarships to 55 high school seniors.
Scholarship recipients can use the financial award to support educational expenses for higher education or vocational training from any accredited post-secondary institution starting in the fall of 2018. Award selection is based on academic achievement and leadership.
Applications for the company's World Class Scholarships are available at www.mediacomworldclass.com. All high schools in the business' served communities received informational cards asking school officials to make seniors aware of the scholarship and encourage submission of applications on or before the Feb. 16, 2018 deadline.
Applicants do not have to be the company's customers but must live in areas where the business provides broadband, video, phone and other digital communication services.

Youth baseball, T-ball, softball registrations open
MILTON — Gospel Projects Youth Athletic Club will open baseball, T-ball and girls softball registrations.
Parents can register their children for these sports through Saturday, Feb. 17.
Gospel Projects provides programs for players ages 3 ½ to 16 for girls and ages 3 ½ to 14 for boys.

Holley Navarre Seniors Center offers snowbird activities card
NAVARRE — The Holley Navarre Seniors Center is offering a Snowbird Activities Card for $25. This will give snowbirds the same privileges, except voting as a full member, until March 31.
Free activities include bridge and other card games, exercise, Greek dancing, yoga, Wii bowling, shuffleboard, corn hole and Thursday game night. Bingo is available at $1 per card and art class is $6.
The center is located at 8476 Gordon Goodin Lane, east of Highway 87 across from the Navarre Library. The office is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Jazz Pensacola seeks arts and crafts exhibitors
PENSACOLA — Jazz Pensacola seeks arts and crafts exhibitors to submit applications for the 2018 JazzFest.
The event takes place April 7-8 at Seville Square in historic downtown Pensacola.
Applications are available at jazzpensacola.com. Just original art and handmade crafts or products will be accepted. No commercial products are allowed for submission.
All entries cost $150, for a 10-by-10-foot canopy or smaller.
