PACE —S.S. Dixon Primary School students kicked off Computer Science Week on Friday at a pep rally centered on coding.

Coding is the set of instructions that computers follow to complete tasks. The school worked with the nonprofit Code.org to put on the rally.

Code.org promotes the importance of women, underrepresented minorities and children learning computer science.

Spencer Lunsford, instructional technology specialist with the Santa Rosa County School District, emceed the rally and taught children the importance and purpose of coding.

Students were introduced to school staffers dressed as popular characters including Elsa from Disney’s "Frozen," Moana from Disney’s "Moana," characters from the game "Angry Birds," Daisy the Dinosaur, Princess Leia and a Stormtrooper from the movie "Star Wars," the character from the game "Minecraft," and others.

The students and the characters participated in a dance during the rally that symbolized aspects of coding, including "looping."

Kelsey Womack, a teacher at Pace High School and faculty sponsor of the robotics team, introduced the audience to two robots built by the club.

Two students from the robotics club demonstrated how they use coding to program robots to perform certain actions.
