GULF BREEZE — Gulf Islands National Seashore areas will offer fee-free entry this weekend, Nov. 11 and 12, in celebration of Veterans Day.
National parks throughout the country annually waive entrance fees on Veterans Day in gratitude for the service and sacrifice of those who have served in the armed forces. Perdido Key, Fort Barrancas, and Okaloosa areas will be fee-free. Fort Pickens and Santa Rosa areas remain closed while road repairs and storm cleanup follow Hurricane Nate in October.
Originally known as Armistice Day, Nov. 11 marks the cessation of hostilities following World War I. Following World War II, the holiday was changed to Veterans Day to honor all of those who have served in the nation’s armed forces.
Several national parks throughout the country preserve the stories of those who have served, including Gulf Islands National Seashore.
