'It was a great location'

MILTON — A total of 365 motorists came to the Guy Thompson Community Center in Milton for the Nov. 4 Tobacco Free Santa Rosa Farm Share event, according to an event official.

Starting at 9:30 a.m., cars on Byrom Street entered the GTCC parking lot to receive one, two or three bags of food and supplies. Items participants received included asparagus and bread.

“There was also frozen chicken, orange juice, plantains, mangoes, (meals ready to eat), green beans, canned baked beans, tomatoes and paper products,” said Michelle Hill, public health services manager with the Florida Department of Health in Santa Rosa County. “The food and non-food items all came from Farm Share. Farm Share collects and distributes the items; we do not know from which specific vendors."

The last car came through at approximately 11:30 a.m., according to Hill.

“There was leftover food, but it was not enough to make full family packs,” Hill said. “The leftover bread and vegetables were taken to the United Way in Milton.”

This is the third year Farm Share has served Santa Rosa County, delivering food to those in need since 2014. However, this was the first time the GTCC hosted the event.

“It was a great location,” Hill said. “We appreciate the help of the community center, Milton Police, Santa Rosa Emergency Management, Whiting Field, the Medical Reserve Corps and all the other partners that helped direct traffic in the neighborhoods to make the event a huge success.”
