MILTON — The Milton Parks and Recreation Department has canceled the Milton Food, Wine and Brew Festival.
The event, planned for Oct. 7, cannot happen "due to scheduling issues beyond our control," a media release states. "The Milton Parks and Recreation Department would like to thank everyone for their support, especially our sponsors Ye Olde Brothers Brewery, Cat Country 98.7 FM and Eight Fifty Media."
Nearly 10 months after allowing alcohol sales within city limits, Milton’s Parks and Recreation Department and the Guy Thompson Community Center planned to host a food, wine and craft beer festival in the downtown historic district.
The festival was to be held from 12-5 p.m. Oct. 7 in the new festival area on South Willing Street.
The City Council approved this event at the July 11 council meeting, with opposition from Councilwomen Pat Lunsford and Peggi Smith.
Lunsford has consistently shown her disapproval of allowing alcohol within the city. Smith, although in support of alcohol sales, said that she believed the city is ill-prepared to host an event such as the Milton Food, Wine & Brew Festival this year, and that the city needed more time to do it right. The rest of the city council approved the idea and a number of residents were in favor of the festival.
The festival would have featured vendors from multiple Florida wineries, local craft breweries, food trucks and a mix of artists from the region. Local artists would have performed live music on the Blackwater stage during the event.
