MILTON — When it comes to weightlifting, Milton High School fraternal twins Luke and Lee Miller have something in common: standout performance.
The two attended USA Weightlifting’s 2017 National Youth Championships June 24 at the Georgia International Convention Center. The student-athletes placed second and third, respectively, in the nation in the 15U, 85-kilogram class.
Luke earned two silver medals for the clean and jerk at 275 pounds and overall combined weight at 484 pounds. He earned a bronze for the snatch at 209 pounds.
Lee earned a silver medal for the snatch at 216 pounds and a pair of bronze medals for the clean and jerk at 264 pounds and overall combined weight at 480 pounds.
The Miller brothers have an edge in the sport: a teammate who is also a sibling.
“He understands me more than other people,” Lee said. “We get along better.”
They push each other to train often, according to Luke.
While the pro would be having a family member for a teammate, the con would be bragging rights, Luke said.
Luke earned the second-place spot while his brother took third, though bragging did not occur at the event.
“They’re very supportive of each other,” their mother, Jonie Miller, said. “When the dust settles, then the bragging rights kick in.”
The twins may often dress similar, according to Jonie, but their aspirations are not.
Lee would like to compete, one day, in the Olympics, but his brother’s goals are in the more immediate future.
“I haven’t thought about the Olympics,” Luke said. “It helps with football and college opportunities.”
