MILTON — The Santa Rosa County grants department has discovered a potential $25,000 grant opportunity for a proposed dog park in the 22-acre Bagdad Mill Site Park. County officials will learn in September whether Santa Rosa will win this grant, according to Santa Rosa County Grants and Special Programs Director Sheila Fitzgerald.

The national pet products company PetSafe will award five applicants across the country $25,000 to establish new dog parks. The grant's terms don't require the county to match funding, but the county must have civic leaders' approval to move forward with the project.

The dog park would include a fenced area for large and small dogs along with equipment and amenities. Such items for pets may include water fountains, ramps, agility and recreation equipment such as arch-way runs, bar jumps, dog slide, stairs, wait tables, benches, a leash post, pet waste station, trash receptacles, signage, and a covered pavilion for shade and picnic tables, according to Fitzgerald.

The Bagdad Mill Site Park opened May 21, 2016. In 2008, the Bagdad Waterfronts Florida Partnership assisted Santa Rosa County to contract with a landscape architect to create a master plan for the park incorporating collected community input.
