Children’s Day Celebration to feature Japanese customs

GULF BREEZE — Children’s Day Celebration, sponsored by The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles and University of West Florida’s Department of Government/ World Languages program, will be held on Saturday, May 20.

The event, which is free to attend, is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Saint Sylvester Catholic Church, 6464 Gulf Breeze Parkway in Gulf Breeze.  

Japanese cultural activities will include carp streamer painting and a coloring competition, origami workshop, Bon dance workshop, Japanese traditional toys, story time, face painting, rice cake making and demonstrations.

Cotton candies, curry, rice balls, beef bowls, Japanese pastries and sweets, Japanese crafts and accessories will be available for purchase.

Cultural workshops and demonstrations include Okinawa Ryukyu dance, Karate, Akido, Japanese traditional dance and flower arrangement. In addition, Japanese language workshops will be held.
