SPEAK OUT: Highway 90 traffic, Bands on the Blackwater rules

Here are featured comments from our Speak Out hotline, discussions on www.srpressgazette.com and its sister websites.

BARRIERS NEEDED NEAR BELL LANE

I drive this route every day. Each time, I look for vehicles coming out of the Tom Thumb as I turn into Bell Lane.

I suggest placing a barrier on the double yellow line to prevent this from happening. Perhaps some of those collapsible, yellow, plastic poles.

MILTON RESIDENTS CAN’T DRIVE

This intersection is not the problem nor (are) courteous drivers.

The problem is that people in Milton do not know how to drive. I have never seen a more non-driving group than those on (Highway) 90 through Milton and Pace.

No one knows what an acceleration lane and turning lane are; hardly anyone uses blinkers; (and) people either go 10 miles under the speed limit or 15 miles over it.

It has always amazed me that we take one driving test at 16 and we are never tested again to make sure that we actually should be on the road.

DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN

Too easy to get and keep a license? Yes.

Ticket distracted drivers? Yes.

But the intersection and the road are part of the problem. Highway 90 has been allowed to become a business district along a 55 mph highway. The resulting speed differences, multiple crossing conflicts and corner stores at backed-up intersections are a setup for hundreds of crashes and several fatalities every year.

RELAX RULES FOR ‘BANDS ON THE BLACKWATER’

Segregation was supposed to be dealt with in the ’40s. I understand the concerns but many things we all use daily are harmful. I don't hear people in neighborhoods saying, “Hey, you can't drive your car down this road because of the toxic deadly fumes it's emitting from its muffler.”

As for the dogs, people should know their animal and, if being around people, loud noises and other animals might be a concern, then their animal should remain at home.

Laws are necessary for order, but when you make laws and rules that start forcing people to feel like this is only for certain people you piss people off and then they really do dumb stuff, like stand in a highway with signs chanting while cars run them over.

Or filling the whole area with dogs and people smoking.

COMMON SENSE, CONSIDERATION NEEDED

No one has the right to subject others to cancer-causing pollutants deliberately.

If a person has a death wish, he or she has the right to do so, but that person does not have the right to poison children and adults. If you are foolish enough to do so, do it in your own space and time!

Also, whether you know your dog or not, they are animals, poop at will, don't speak and don't warn before attack. What the heck happened to good ol' common sense and consideration?

Oh yes, pick up your nasty cigarette butts! Mercy!

SMOKERS DON’T HAVE LEPROSY

For crying out loud… I am a non-smoker. And I for one am sick and tired of smokers being treated like they have leprosy. It's an outdoor event. I say let people smoke. Contrary to the propaganda put out by the media, second-hand smoke (isn’t) going to be what kills you.

I repeat: second-hand smoke will not be your cause of death.

And dogs are required to be leashed.

Allowing people to smoke in an outdoor venue and bring leashed pets is more than reasonable.
