MILTON — When the Milton City Council was considering bike racks for the city, Councilwoman Ashley Lay suggested seeking local help.
This conversation led to the city reaching out to Locklin Tech. The school’s welding class created four racks featuring the city’s logo.
Students who worked on the project, Milton High's Devin Merrell, Pace High's Michael Wall and Alec LaDouceur, Jay High's Mitch McGee, and Pace High's Kolby Odom, spent about three months fabricating the roughly 300-plus-pound metal racks, according to LaDouceur. Production Metal Stampings in Milton donated the metal and the students provided the labor.
The goal? Lasting results.
“When we bolt them, they’re not going anywhere,” LaDouceur said.
Milton Public Works Director George Rials said the city would install the racks at the Riverwalk South and North, downtown near the fountain, and either at city hall or the Guy Thompson Community Center.
