No taxpayer bailout for destroying clean air and water

Dear editor,

“The Art of War,” written by Sun Tzu around 500 B.C., begins with Laying Plans. He notes Heaven and Earth are two of five constant factors that govern the art of war. Whoever has the advantage there, will have the advantage in destroying their enemy.

For example, an enemy might consider tactics like:

  • Permanently polluting streams
  • Destroying drinking water sources
  • Increasing flood risk and threatening forests that create air
  • Destroying protection for millions of miles of streams and wetlands, which could threaten the drinking water for millions of people and species
  • Allowing poisonous gases to be emitted into the air
  • Filling the air with millions of gallons of carbon dioxide — like the uninhabitable planet Mars
  • Cutting funding for those who monitor the safety of air and water
  • Allowing the poisoning of air and water, which could cause 11,000 premature deaths, 4,700 heart attacks and 130,000 asthma attacks every year.

Our “friends,” President Trump and the Republican leadership, have encouraged all the above.

Absent is any accountability by the air and water destroyers — must be the American taxpayer again.

On Earth Day 2017, we should all be outraged.
