GULF BREEZE — Visitors should expect single-lane closures and delays while traveling through the Fort Pickens area, Gulf Islands National Seashore officials said.

Approximately 4.45 miles of the road are receiving an asphalt overlay resurfacing. An asphalt overlay project is a common maintenance technique to extend the life of an asphalt roadway.

The current work consists of milling the existing top layer of asphalt, and applying a new layer of asphalt approximately 1.5 to 2 inches thick. The overlay project will extend the road’s lifespan and improve striping.

Additionally, realignment of 1.5 miles of the road to the north — moving the road away from the Gulf to help reduce road closures due to storm overwash — is underway.

All work should be completed by March to prevent affecting bird nesting season.
