Dear editor,
I would like to publicly commend both Mayor Meiss and Councilwoman Johnson from the city of Milton for their actions Tuesday, Jan. 3.
Public service is very difficult and made more so by a toxic, divisive atmosphere created by national partisan political behavior.
Despite a divisive situation, I commend Mayor Meiss for apologizing for not handling a circumstance as well as he should have, and I too commend Councilwoman Johnson for accepting the apology.
I am not at all well-versed on the issue any more than what I read in the paper. However, with government only operating in the open sunshine, you sometimes are not as prepared for the information that hits as if you were if you had the time to prepare and reflect.
Likewise, sometimes things happen to you unfairly, but that does not mean the other people involved have nefarious intentions.
Too often, without knowing the details, both sides rush to their respective corners and become rigid in defense of their position. Instead, what happened was, after the opportunity to reflect, someone took responsibility for their error and apologized, and someone else recognized the sincerity and accepted that apology.
For this reason, I wish to commend both public servants and tell them I am proud to serve our region with them.
GROVER ROBINSON
Escambia County Commissioner, District 4
Pensacola
