MILTON — Santa Rosa County is officially the first county along the Gulf Coast recognized as ‘TsunamiReady’ by the National Weather Service.

The voluntary community recognition program certifies the county’s ability to meet guidelines “for a standard level of capability to mitigate, prepare for and respond to tsunamis,” an SRC media release stated.

While the probability of a tsunami affecting the Gulf Coast is minimal, Florida is included in the U.S. Tsunami Warning System due to identified underwater landslides in the Gulf of Mexico, which are potential sources for tsunami activity.
