3 things to do in Santa Rosa County

1. LEARN HOW TO PREVENT FALLS. The Guy Thompson Community Center presents ‘Falls Prevention Day’ for senior citizens. The event, 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at 5629 Byrom St., will include free health screenings and diabetes education along with fall prevention and recovery education. A ‘Preventing Falls’ seminar — presented by  Dr. Ann Gwinnup with the Santa Rosa Medical Group — is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Attendees can donate their gently used glasses to the Lions Club, which will offer vision tests. The event will also feature demonstrations of tai chi, yoga and pickleball.

2. RUN ALONG THE BLACKWATER TRAIL. The SAFER 5K Heart Healthy Community Run/Walk event begins 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The starting line is along the scenic Blackwater Heritage Trail near the Sun Trust Bank in Milton, 5224 Stewart St. Registration costs $20 for ages 12 and older and $10 for ages 12 and younger. 3. LEARN THE INS AND OUTS OF COMPOSTING. ‘Mondays in the Gardens’ is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the University of Florida on Milton’s Pensacola State College campus. The one-hour presentation, sponsored by the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences’ Santa Rosa County office, will cover composting. Attendees will learn different methods for creating compost for use in landscaping. An active compost pile will be demonstrated at the campus’s UF Milton Gardens. The event is free to attend and no pre-registration is required. The college campus is located at 5988 U.S. Highway 90.
