MILTON — Santa Rosa County’s Katie Carmichael and Sydney English won first place, and Jamilah Muhammad third, in their events at the 4-H state competition at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Week-long state competitions take place each summer during the 4-H university youth conference.

At this year's conference, 4-Hers Katie Carmichael and Sydney English jointly presented an illustrated talk, "Hit It with Your Best Shot," achieving a blue ribbon at county and district level, and first place in state.

The presentation discussed proper shotgun shells for each gun and purpose, whether hunting, target practice, or home protection, as well as the makeup of a shotgun.
