Volunteers sought for first-ever Santa Rosa Day of Service

MILTON — The Support Alliance For Emergency Readiness of Santa Rosa County has scheduled a day of voluntary service on July 23.

The Day of Service is a volunteer-driven effort to help local residents and  improve local communities.

“This isn’t an official Santa Rosa County event,” Santa Rosa County Public Information Officer Brandi Whitehurst said. “It’s more community driven. We’re just providing a platform to get the word out about it.”

She said the county website, www.santarosa.fl.gov/dayofservice, lists the projects in need of volunteers.

So, what kinds of projects are ideal for the Day of Service?

“We want people to think of unmet needs,” where an existing agency isn’t already taking care of the problem, Whitehurst said.

Projects, among others, include:

●The Food Inspection and Sorting project, organized by the Santa Rosa Young Professionals; will take place at the Feeding the Gulf Coast-Panhandle Branch. Volunteers will help inspect and sort food donations to get them ready for distribution to those in need.

●The Handicap Ramp @ Good Samaritan Building project, organized by Interfaith Ministries; will take place at 4435 Gulf Breeze Parkway. This project encompasses building two ramps and needs volunteers for labor, specifically someone with knowledge of building ramps to meet county codes.

●The Helping Paws project, organized by Troy University; will happen at Animal Services, but takes place in two parts: collecting pet food leading up to the Day of Service, then helping to clean out cages, take dogs on walks, clean litter boxes and give baths.

●The Society of St. Andrew Produce Drop project, which needs 100 volunteers; will take place at First United Methodist Church, 6830 Berryhill St., co-event organizer. The Society of St. Andrew will deliver a tractor-trailer truckload of produce to the church’s property. Volunteers will bag the produce for distribution to Santa Rosa County agencies that feed hungry people.
