Just a week left for Navarre Beach renourishment project

NAVARRE — This week, a contractor will continue filling segment four of Navarre Beach. At their current pace, workers are expected to reach the project’s western end in approximately 10 days.

During the past week, crews on the Navarre Beach renourishment project continued filling the fourth and final segment, including restoration of dunes.

Approximately 140,000 cubic yards of sand — enough to fill close to 7,800 dump trucks — were pumped on the beach, bringing the total renourishment to over 1.1 million cubic yards since the project began. As of June 9, 191 turtles have been relocated outside the borrow area.

The project encountered a brief delay on June 6 and 7 due to elevated water levels and waves associated with Tropical Storm Colin, which flooded the lower beach berm and inhibited dredging operations. Normal operations resumed within approximately 24 hours.
