SOUTHERN RACEWAY: Turpen dominates Southern Outlaw Sprints feature

MILTON — The “Fastest Girl on Dirt” lived up to her nickname Saturday night at Southern Raceway.

After posting the fast time in hot laps, Morgan Turpen dominated the 25-lap Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series Southern Outlaw Sprints at Southern Raceway.

Her fast lap of 14.626 seconds on the three-eighths-mile dirt set the stage where she became the sixth winner this season in six events for the Southern Outlaw Sprints, and she became the second woman to win an ASCS event, following New York’s Jessica Zemken.

While Turpen dominated the 25-lap event — where she lapped some cars as many as three times — Marshall Skinner took over the series point lead from Derek Hagar by finishing second.

Rounding out the top five were Shane Morgan, Michael Miller and Turpen’s teammate and car owner, Terry Gray.

Turpen, who has two wins in three appearances at Southern Raceway, is expected to return with the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaws on Sept. 3.

In the Pure Stock Division, Fort Walton Beach’s Jessica Donaldson jumped to an early lead and led the first 18 of the 20-lap feature until misfortune happened in turns one and two.

With Donaldson leading after surviving six earlier cautions, she brought out yellow flag No. 7 after being tapped from behind and spinning while trying to exit turn two.

While Donaldson went to the rear of the field with two laps remaining, she was joined by series points leader Carl Dodson for causing the spin.

Another caution on lap 19 led to a one-lap dash for the checkered flag, which Joshua Howell won.

William Arnett and Bubba Fletcher crossed the line in second and third place, respectively, while Dodson and Donaldson fought their way through the field to finish fourth and fifth.

Ryan Fowler has returned to his Open Wheel Modified winning form; he dominated a field of 13 to win Saturday’s 15-lap feature.

While Fowler dominated the race, Joey Moxley, Mike Lane, Nick Poole and Kyle Rutkoski battled to see who would finish second through fourth.

Lane went high in turns three and four around lap eight and exited the track, after he and Moxley had swapped the second spot about three or four times.

Moxley must have used up his tires while battling with Lane and ended up finishing third behind Nick Poole. Kyle Rutkoski and Eli Williams rounded out the top five.

Vintage drivers John Cody and Blake Martin have battled hard each lap to see who will win weekly.

Saturday night belonged to Cody, who held off Martin.

The rest of the pack ended up racing to see who would finish third.

Kylan Nathey took that honor, followed by Aleck Alford and Logan Nathey to round out the top five.

Bo Bailey played a game of “catch me if you can” early on in the NeSmith Street Stock class. Unfortunately for the Milton driver, Brandon Kilpatrick caught and passed him.

Kilpatrick won the 12-lap feature, which was completed without incident, followed by Bailey.

Rounding out the top five were Justin Abel, Tim Wetzel and Matthew Holcomb.
