LETTER: Milton: ‘the Mayberry of Northwest Florida’

Dear editor,

I can't believe we have people like (Milton City Council members) Ms. (Patsy) Lunsford and Grady Hester making biased decisions that affect so many people.

Am I wrong in thinking that they work for us and they should not let their personal, paranoid fears warp their thinking? Oh, but don't worry, your vote in any way doesn't count because the Sunday alcohol ordinance can't and won't be changed! I thought we lived in a free nation — not like Germany during World War 2.

… Downtown Milton — or "down there" as (Ms. Lunsford) calls it — will never be like New Orleans, but instead looks more like sections of Detroit, with all the empty buildings. Just how many people are going to die from alcohol "down there?”

If we were all paranoid about everything around us, people would put us away for being crazy.

I'm sorry Ms. Lunsford, but there are plenty of other things — like drugs, smoking, cars, trucks, airplanes, cancer, and many other things — that can kill people. You will never protect us from everything that can kill us! Please do an un-biased job! Don't worry — be happy!

I believe there are too many violations around here of the First Amendment of the Constitution, which requires the separation of church and state. There are way too many references to the "church" when city and county business is discussed.

This may be a surprise to you, but drunks will always be drunks, whether it's Sunday or not. People — and drunks, for that matter — will get alcohol from other cities or counties, giving those areas the profit.

Welcome to the Mayberry of Northwest Florida. Where are Barney and Goober when you need them?

TERRY CARMICHAEL

Milton
