VFW to honor fallen Marine with May 21 golf tournament

MILTON — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4833’s ninth annual Honor Your Vet Golf Tournament is set for May 21 on Armed Forces Day.

The event — which commemorates United States Marine Corps Cpl. Jonathan R. Spear and takes place at Tanglewood Golf Club, 5916 Tanglewood Drive in Milton — will feature a four-person scramble. Pick your own team. There is no handicap required. The cutoff will be at 28 teams.

The entry fee — $50 per person or $200 per team — covers green fees, cart and free drinks during play. Dinner, door prizes and awards will be held after the tournament at the VFW.

Prizes are $400 for first place, $300 for second, $200 for third and $80 for last. There will also be prizes for longest drive, closest to pin, and a new car or $15,000 for a hole-in-one sponsored by Milton Chevrolet.

Eighty percent of profits will go toward helping veterans and veteran families, with 20 percent going to the Cpl. Jonathan R. Spear Scholarship Fund. Pensacola-born Spears died Oct. 23, 2005 during his second tour of duty deployed in Iraq.
