Fowler’s streak ends on Southern Raceway’s dirt
MILTON — Milton’s Ryan Fowler experienced defeat the first time this season, as his winning streak ended Saturday night at Southern Raceway.
Mike Lane, who missed the last three races, took an early lead, and the only time the field even got close to his “The Money Team” open wheeled modified is when Britt Cole Eisenhut brought out a caution on lap 16, when his motor went up in flames on the backstretch.
Lane restarted in the lead — with Tyler Allen, Ryan Fowler and Lucas Morris in tow — but Lane once again pulled away, while Morris knifed his way through the field on the final four laps to finish second ahead of Fowler and Allen. Dale Peaden rounded out the top five.
After the feature race, the top five finishers competed in a six-lap shootout.
Morris started the shootout from the pole, and held the lead all six laps for the bonus purse. Behind Morris were Lane, Allen, Fowler and then Peaden, rounding out the top five.
In the NeSmith Street Stock division, a first-time driver on the three-eighths-mile dirt stole the show and the checkered flag.
Spencer Hughes, 15, started third in the 20-lap feature, but he quickly put the field in his rear view mirror as he took the checkered flag.
Many thought Hughes might crack on the lap 19 restart, but he led the field to the stripe and held off the challenges of Larry Faulk and Bo Bailey, who came home second and third. Pole sitter Howie Reeves finished fourth followed by Michael Williams.
In the Pure Stock division, David Edmondson led the first 13 laps of the feature. Then on lap 14, Christopher Gibson’s car made a hard left turn, coming off of turn two, and went into the infield and gave the lead to Adam Ellison. Ellison took advantage of Edmondson’s mistake and held onto the lead for the checkered flag.
Behind Edmondson were Jessica Donaldson in second; Carl Dodson, who started tail end of the field, rallying to finish third; followed by Jason Dollar and Zac Morris, who rounded out the top five.
Blake Martin won the Vintage class.
Nearly half of the field in Saturday’s race was hampered during hot laps.
The only caution of the 10-lap feature was brought out when John Cody over-drove his car in turn three on lap seven while trying to close on Martin.
Last week’s winner, Aleck Alford, finished second while Cody came in third.
