Now, we catch up with Butcher:
Why did you sign with Walsh University in Ohio?
I moved from Ohio my sophomore year. I just contacted the coaches and showed them some stuff, then I went up there on a visit and pretty much just sealed the deal.
I have mixed emotions about it, because I know I will miss my family and friends here, but it will be fun to go back up (north). I will have family close; my mom’s family lives in Buffalo, which is only like two-and-a-half hours away. I also have family in Columbus.
Did you ever imagine your talent as a placekicker would lead you to this opportunity?
When I first started, no. I know I wanted to play collegiate sports, and I fell in love with football. It was during field day last year, they had a field-goal kicking competition. I was a soccer player and all of my friends got me to go over and do it. They kept making bets and moving me back, and I kept making it. They stopped making bets and took me to the coach.
Reflecting on your time at Pace, what are some highlights?
My time here in Pace has been great; the coaches have always been supportive. The practices and the team — it’s like a real family environment, because you spend so much time (with them) and the fans … the community is great to play in front of.
The spring game was a big highlight for me, because it boosted my confidence. We played Milton (High School) and I kicked the game winner from 28 yards.
I knew I could handle the pressure then; at first I was shaky because I had never done that before.
What have Pace’s coaches taught you during your time as a Patriot?
They really helped me with the mental side of the game. You can’t dwell on a missed (field goal).
Coach (Mickey) Lindsey was great to me, especially because he knew my potential. When I started to slack, he would try and get me right back in gear.
What are your career goals?
I plan on going into the medical field. I want to do something related to cancer, because my mom had cancer.
