Around 10 after 8 a.m. this morning, Ernie Andrus passed the Sonic on Highway 90. The World War II veteran started walking from San Diego, California October 7, 2013 on his way to Saint Simons Island, Georgia. He expects to arrive in August of this year at 93 years old. His monumental purpose is to raise money for the LST 325 Ship Memorial, Inc, an organization working to "return the ship to Normandy for the D-Day Memorial Service (D-Day Plus 70, 2014) and beach it at the same location where it was on Omaha beach 70 years before," according to Andrus' website, www.coast2coastruns.com.
