Things to do: Lumberjack Festival, “Six Degrees of Separation,” Riverwalk Art Festival, Spring Fling and Beekeeping courses

The Milton Campus of Pensacola State College is set to host the 28th Annual Lumberjack Festival on Saturday which will include a variety of competitions including sawing.

This upcoming weekend will be comprised of outdoor competition, entertainment and “Six Degrees of Separation.” Pensacola State College will be presenting their 28th Annual Lumberjack Festival at the Milton Campus and bringing “Six Degrees of Separation” to the stage. Also the Spring Fling Music Festival is happening at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds on Saturday along with the 28th Annual Riverwalk Arts Festival in downtown Milton. The University of Florida/IFAS Extension office will also welcome residents to take part in a ‘Beekeeping short course.’

The 28th Annual Lumberjack Festival

Lumberjack-themed competitions are just a fraction of what is scheduled to occur at the Pensacola State College Milton Campus on Saturday from 8.a.m. to 3 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the community, will include outdoor exhibits, children’s activities, bluegrass music, food and more.

The forestry competitions, which consist of knife and axe throwing, log rolling, sawing, log tossing and more, will feature a junior competition for 13-15 year olds which take place at 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.  Registration for the competitions begins at 7:30 a.m. Children, senior citizens and high school students compete for free, according to the event’s press release. For other competitors, there is a $5 participation fee.

While the supply lasts, attendees get to select free tree seedlings from a variety of species and receive information from experts on planting and proper care. The festival also includes opportunities to learn about environmental degree programs offered by PSC and the University of Florida at the Milton campus, which is located at 5988 U.S. Highway 90.

 Milton Spring Fling Music Festival

Local musical acts, including Southern Drawl Band, The Molly Ringwalds, The Jason Abel Project and more are scheduled to perform during the Milton Spring Fling Music Festival on Saturday at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds. In addition to the live music in a family friendly atmosphere, the festival will also include a ‘Kids’ Zone’ and food and drink vendors. Ticket prices are $25 for adults, $20 for military (must have ID), $5 for children and $75 for a VIP tickets (must be 21 or older). PSC’s Performing Arts  Department presents “Six Degrees of Separation”

 Beginning on March 3 through 6, the Pensacola State College Performing Arts Department will bring the “Six Degrees of Separation” to the stage at the Ashmore Fine Arts Auditorium of the PSC Pensacola Campus, located at 1000 College Boulevard.  The play follows the true story of a con man who claimed to be the son of actor Sidney Poitier and further explores how everyone is connected to everyone else by a chain of no more than six acquaintances.  Show times begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.  Tickets for reserve admission is $11, $9 for seniors ages 60 and older, children and non PSC students, $7 for PSC faculty and PSC Senior Club members. UF/IFAS Extension offers Beekeeping short course

The Panhandle Agriculture team with the University of Florida IFAS Extension Office is offering expert advice into the world of beekeeping starting on Monday, March 7. The courses will feature insight on a broad range of bee-related topics from an introduction to beekeeping, bee nutrition, bee botany and more. The courses will be offered through each extension office across the panhandle via interactive video.  In addition to the March 7 session, the class which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday , March 14 and 21. Each presentation will have an interactive question and answer period. Registration is $15 per person and $25 for a family and covers the cost of materials and refreshments. The course will take place at both the Santa Rosa and EscambiaCounty extension locations. For more information call the Santa RosaCounty extensions office at 623-3868 and Escambia at  475-5230. 28th Annual Riverwalk Arts Festival

The SRACF 28th Annual Riverwalk Arts Festival will be on banks of the Blackwater River March 5th from  10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, March  6th  from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. The festival will feature juried fine art, heritage folk art, cultural performances, continuous music and food, business booths, Kid’s Fun Zone and the All County Youth Art Exhibit. Awards will be given for Best in Show, First Place, Second Place and Honorable Mention in each qualifying category. For more information about the event call 981-1100.
