Dear Editor,
February 12 was Abraham Lincoln’s birth date. The 15th is President’s Day. Thank God for Lincoln and George Washington, two God-honoring men. We’re reminded of Lincoln’s sage advice, labeled by him as “The Cannots.”
“You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
“You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
“You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
“You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
“You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
“You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
“You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
“You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
“You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.
“You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.”
Sage advice indeed. He also said, “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this Book. I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. I can see how it might be possible for a man to look down upon the earth and be an atheist, but I cannot conceive how he could look up to Heaven and say there is no God.”
George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” Amen and amen.
May God forgive America, have mercy and bless us with a president like these two God-honoring men. There’s much talk about evangelicals voting right now. If all evangelicals, born again believers, exercised their privilege, heretofore not done, what God wouldn’t do to restore our land, dependence on Him, Hallelujah!
