Students in the Pace High School drama program are bringing the popular children’s book ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ to life next week as their first musical performance of this school year.
While performing a musical might come as a challenge, the two lead actors are willing to rise to the occasion.
“It’s more of a challenge because you have to learn the music and all of the lyrics, but I also consider it to be more fun,” said Baleigh Perritt, who plays Leslie Burke.
Although this will the first time Ethan Price will take center stage as a main character with the role of Jesse Aarons, Price said he confident with his upcoming performance.
“I think I am more comfortable doing a musical than a play, because I sing in the (school) choir and I just really like singing,” he said.
While many might be familiar with the 2007 film, the play will focus on the popular children’s book written by Katherine Paterson, which was published in 1987.
“We are more focused on the characters and the movie focused more on the creatures of Terabithia,” Perritt said.
The story follows two kids who bond and find comfort while traveling to the imaginary land of Terabithia.
Both Perritt and Price say the audience can expect to endure a “whirlwind of emotions” and should consider bringing some tissues for the show.
“I think it’s a drama with a little bit of humor in it,” Perritt said.
Avery Brown, the production’s stage manager, used the word ‘sweet’ to describe the upcoming show.
“I think it is going to be really good,” Brown said. “This is a great b ook with a great story. I know I will read it to my kids.”
Like Price, this production has given Brown exposure to the other side of producing a stage play.
“This has really showed me that I don’t have to be on stage all of the time,” Brown said. “Everybody who works backstage and everybody who works on the stage are equally helpful to the show.”
