John Marshall Fitzgerald

John Marshall Fitzgerald, 59, remains in custody at the Santa Rosa County Jail following Friday’s shooting at a Navarre residence, while one of his alleged victims currently remains in critical condition at an area hospital.

According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, Nelson Rivers Starkey was one of several individuals inside a residence when Fitzgerald reportedly opened fire, critically injuring Starkey. The 22-year-old victim from Florence, Alabama was taken by helicopter for treatment. No one else involved with the incident was injured, according to the reports.

Friends and family members have set up a fundraising account on www.gofundme.com for Starkey, to help the family cover travel and medical expenses. The website states Starkey is currently located at the Intensive Care Unit at the SacredHeartHospital in Pensacola.  As of this time, the ‘Rivers Starkey Love Offering’ account has raised more than $5,000.

The arrest report for Fitzgerald states first responders got a call from Navarre residence with an individual telling 911 operators they had just shot someone then they hung up. When responding the residence on Valley Road in Navarre, officers found Fitzgerald sitting on the front porch with blood on his clothing.

In an email, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Rick Aloy said the shooting resulted from a dispute which occurred in the household and that Starkey was a friend of the family.

Fitzgerald is facing a charge of both attempted murder and aggravated assault with no bond amount set.
