Milton business to 'Paint it Pink' for breast cancer awareness

Participants from a previous ‘Paint it Pink’ event at Simply Southern in Milton work on their individual art pieces. The Milton business is once again hosting the event for October 8.

Simply Southern, a Milton store offering antiques, decor and gifts, will have two opportunities for residents to both raise funds and awareness in the fight against breast cancer during the month of October.

“It’s a two-part thing, we do the pink flamingos and the paint party,” said store owner Becky Smith.

Throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Simply Southern will offer residents the opportunity to adopt a pink flaming lawn decoration.

While being placed outside the store, the pink flamingos can be adopted for $10 and feature the name of a close friend or loved one.

“They can donate in memory of someone they have lost or to someone that is a survivor of breast cancer,” Smith said. “Generally everybody has been touched by breast cancer, one way or another.”

In addition to having the pink flamingos on display, Simply Southern will also be hosting another ‘Paint it Pink’ event, which will also benefits Making Strides for Breast Cancer.

On October 8th, the business will host an afterhours painting party, which will feature instruction from a local artist Elaine Woodward and refreshments.

“She walks you through what to paint one step at a time,” she said.

Smith said each participant’s artwork is unique.

“They all turnout totally different…some may decide they want to decide to use a different background,” she said.

The store supplies the paint and the canvas, and participants are able to take their pieces of artwork home. Smith said artists with the least amount of experience should not hesitate.

“If I can do it, anyone can do it,” Smith said. “It’s going to be something simple.”

In years past, Smith said the ‘Paint it’ event and the flamingos have raised around $500 for ‘Making Strides.’

Seating is limited, Smith said. Interested participants can call the Simply Southern and register over the phone or in person during regular business hours. Smith said participants have until October 6th to register.
