Joel Anthony Beauchemin, 22, remains in custody at the Santa Rosa County Jail after a DNA sample connected the Navarre resident to a bank robbery, which occurred in April of this year.
According to a press release from the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, the bank robbery took place at the Centennial Bank on U.S. Highway 98 in Navarre on the morning of April 17. Bank tellers gave a description of the suspect detailing the events of the theft to an investigating sheriff’s deputy at the scene.
In Beauchemin’s arrest report, the tellers told the investigating deputy the suspect left a threatening note, taking an amount of cash while quickly exiting the bank. The tellers told the deputy they did not see any weapons on the suspect during the robbery.
The department’s K-9 unit began tracing the whereabouts of the suspect through a wooded area and a nearby vacant lot. While the K-9 unit was unable to finish tracking the suspect, an investigating deputy was able to pick up where the unit left off, according to the report.
The tracking information from the K-9 unit led the investigating deputy to a pair of latex gloves and additional clothing items described as worn by the suspect in the robbery. The DNA found in the latex gloves matched Beauchemin.
After seeing the evidence, a judge signed the warrant for Beauchemin’s arrest. However he turned himself in to the authorities. Beauchemin faces charges of robbery and larceny.
