Beaches to Woodlands schedule October

Two fishing events are coming up this weekend, Take a Kid Fishing and the Navarre Fishing Rodeo. The first event will take place on the Navarre Beach Pier at 8 a.m. The first 500 children under 12 receive a free fishing pole. The second event runs Saturday at midnight to Sunday at 4 p.m. Contestants can fish from the shore, a boat or kayak, or from the pier. Junior anglers twelve and under can compete in the Junior Division for free.

This weekend is packed with events as the Beaches to Woodlands Tour enters fall in high gear. Here is what’s happening…

Oct. 2-31 Christ United Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch

5983 Dogwood Drive, Milton

11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

The pumpkins are grown and provided by Native Americans and the sale benefits the Christ United Methodist Church and Jr. Navy  ROTC.

Oct. 1-31 Flamingos Flock Milton at Simply Southern Gifts

5165 Canal Street, Milton

10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturdays throughout the month.

Flamingos will “flock” to the gardens of the historic house/shop to mark breast cancer month. Individuals can tag a flamingo with a $10 donation.

Oct. 2 and 16 Santa RosaCountyMuseum of Local History,

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Visitors are  invited to tour the museum and learn about the history, historic buildings and places, and people and events of Santa Rosa County. There are also books on local history are for sale in the museum store.

Named Santa RosaCounty’s 2014 “Innovative Farm of the Year,” a variety of workshops will be held at this solar-powered, organic method farm. Small fees are charged.

Oct. 3 & 10 Bagdad United Methodist Church History Open House,

Oct. 3-4 26th Annual Jay Peanut Festival

Gabbert Farm, 3604 Pine Level Church Rd., Jay

9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Celebrate one of Santa Rosa’s staple crops, the peanut. This popular annual event marks its 26th year and showcases farming life past and present and gives folks a chance to experience country life. The festival features more than 200 vendors from across the southeast plus a 1930s FarmMuseum and 1940s John Deere Dealership. Enjoy the food booths, games and fun. This event was started in honor of Melissa Caroline Gabbert, who died more than 20 years ago from cancer complications.

Oct. 3 City of Milton Riverwalk Run 5K,

5 p.m.

This popular and rare afternoon race starts at the intersection of Berryhill Road and Willing Street and traverses through historic downtown Milton. Registration is only available online at: www.runsignup.com and will be available on race day between 4 and 4:45 p.m. at the Riverwalk Pavilion. Proceeds benefit youth and senior programs. Volunteers needed.

Oct. 3 Pink Pirates Run/Walk 5K Making Breast Cancer Walk the Plank

Entry fee: $25.

This 5k is a fundraiser for breast cancer research and mammograms.

October 3, 10, 17, and 24 Arcadia Mill “Secrets of Santa Rosa Archeology & History in Your Own Backyard”

Arcadia Mill Archaeological Site, 5709 Mill Pond Lane, Milton

Arcadia Mill is Florida’s largest antebellum industrial complex. Each Saturday in October, this lecture series event is presented by the University of West Florida, the Florida Public Archeology Network, West Florida Historic Preservation, Inc., and Arcadia Mill.

Open three weekends on the tour, the Gulf Coast Kiln Walk Society has the largest wood fueled anagama kiln and the only reconstructed wood fueled kiln from the 1940s in the state. Holley Hill Pottery has been in business in Santa Rosa County for over 30 years using local clays, capturing the lifestyle, scenery and sea life of the Gulf Coast.

Fish from the shore, a boat or kayak, or from the pier, just not from the seafood market. Prizes will be awarded in all divisions. Weigh-in is at Juana’s on Navarre Beach Causeway. Scales close promptly at 4 p.m. on both days. Junior anglers twelve and under can compete in the Junior Division for free. Proceeds from this event benefit the NavarreBeachMarinePark, including the NavarreBeachSeaTurtleConservationCenter, the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary and the Marine Science Station. The event will benefit Heroes on the Water and Take a Kid Fishing. Captain’s bags will have goodies.
