Dewayne Martin, 25, of New Orleans was sentenced to life in state prison for burglary, grand theft auto, grand theft and resisting an officer without violence following a recent arrest in Milton, according to a press release from State Attorney Bill Eddins office. Martin entered a plea to the charges on July 10, 2015.
On March 5, Martin entered a home on Pat Brown Road near Milton, while armed with a hammer. According to the press release, the couple who lived there heard the back door open and saw Martin enter their residence with the hammer raised. Martin told the couple he needed gas, but the couple told Martin to leave. During this exchange, the couple’s pit bull growled allowing the female occupant to take the hammer from Martin’s hand.
According the press release, Martin then ran outside and attempted to start the family’s ATV to no success. Deputies later arrived on scene after receiving a call and tracked Martin who initially ran from the deputies before being caught and arrested.
Deputies also found a white Suzuki a short distance from the home in which the attempted burglary had occurred. The report said Martin had been driving the vehicle, which was reported stolen in New Orleans on March 4.
The owner of the car reported that she had been approached by a black male, who threatened her with a gun if she did not give him the keys to the car. Martin is also wanted for a double homicide that occurred in East New Orleans on March 3, 2015.
The investigation and arrest were conducted by the Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office.
