Mother’s Day may be the only day of the year when mom gets breakfast in bed. Typically, mothers around the country will receive bad coffee, burned toast or under cooked pancakes. Scrambled eggs with just a bit of shell is also on the menu. Most moms will smile as they taste the precious offering. Later they will clean up the mess left behind.
Mothers will take anything if given with love. Tenderness from husband and child is what is preferred. Anything from a toad to a bouquet of weeds is considered a present of high regard.
Some children didn’t have as much of a June Clever role model. But even still, the woman who brought you into the world at least deserves some respect or maybe a sincere congratulations. Tomorrow is a salute to their hard work, dedication and undying love given to those she loves.
Mothers give unselfishly to their families. But being a mother is so much more than the basic job. I believe as a mother you’re doing your part in society rearing God-fearing, responsible adults. Motherhood is more than giving in to every whim, buying expensive shoes or lobbying for the best position on a sports team. It’s more than baking cookies in the afternoon, being creative with pasta and keeping the house clean. Motherhood hides all of the hard work behind its name. Glamorous photography of families dressed in white on the beach doesn’t signify the true meaning. It’s taking on the responsibility of seeing to fruition the training of a child into what he or she is to become.
The reality of motherhood is not seeing the fruit of your labors for 20 years or more. It’s listening and seeing through deception and rebellion to bring forth truth through prayer and the Holy Spirit’s acumen. It’s listening intently. It’s showing the love of God when it’s most important.
Character building isn’t pretty but it’s what motherhood is all about. The other aspects: kisses, tears, healing, family time, cooking, hugs, laundry, laughter and being a family who loves each other is the icing on the lopsided cake served up on our special day.
Happy Mother’s Day to Glenda Freeman Blankenship. I’m proud to be your daughter. Thank you for all of your hard work.
