Milton: Worrell opts to play golf for University of South Alabama (VIDEO)

Milton High School senior Lexi Worrell, center, commits to playing college golf with University of South Alabama. Lexi, who also played softball and basketball for MHS, was joined by her family at the event on Friday. From the left are her mother Tracey, father Danny and sister Caroline.

Although Lexi Worrell played in the Milton High School’s softball and basketball teams, the senior classman will take her golfing talents to the University of South Alabama after recently signing a golf scholarship with the university.

Excelling in golf is no surprise to her mother, Tracey, who also serves as the school’s golf coach.

“She started out in the First Tee program and she got better and better,” Tracey said. “As a junior, she was very instrumental in leading her team to a district championship and a regional championship and she placed eight in state. No other girl on a Milton High School team has ever done that.”

In addition to having her mother as her golf coach, Lexi was also coached by her father Danny while on the school’s softball team.

Being coached by her parents did not come with many advantages, Lexi said.

“(Being coached by mom and) by dad both actually pushed me harder and got on to me more than anybody else,” she said. “It seems like you would be able to get away with a lot, but they didn’t let me.”

Although Lexi will be moving on following graduation, Lexi said her both of her parents will always be part of her game.

“They are always a part of my sports,” she said. “When I was little, my dad would always go out on the golf course with me and anytime I would want to go play basketball he would always take me out there. He has always been my coach.”

In addition to making an immediate impact at USA in winning golf tournaments, Worrell plans to pursue a degree in education. Lexi’s mother also teaches math at MHS.

Danny said his daughter has always excelled academically and hope his daughter will continue to do so while playing golf at USA.

“College is business, she is going to be golfing at 20 hours a week…it’s a big commitment,” he said. “She’s gotta make sure she keeps her grades up and prioritizes and make sure she combines athletics with academics.”
