The City of Milton has scheduled their 21st Annual Arbor Day celebration for Friday afternoon, in which the city will also be celebrating 20 years as part of the Arbor Day Foundation’s ‘Tree City USA’ community.
As part of the national program, Milton has met the four standards established by the foundation and National Association of State Foresters. Among the standards are having a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program with annual budget of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation.
According to the Arborday.org website, there are more than 3400 communities currently in Tree City USA.
Milton Mayor Wesley Meiss is expected to give the proclamation at the event in which city officials will plant three drake elm trees, ranging between 10 to 12 feet tall, said Lori Lynn Smith, an administrative assistant with the city’s planning and development department.
The trees will be planted near the city’s compressed natural gas, or CNG, filling station, located near the Milton City Hall building. Smith said the trees will serve as a buffer between the city hall building and the filling station. For more information on the event, call 983-5440.
