Pyrates River Cleanup is next weekend

Left to Right: Maltese (aka Dean Hinton), CPT Dragon (aka Ralph Palmer), Wicked Pam Flint (aka Pam Palmer) clean up Blackwater River in last year’s event.

This year’s Blackwater Pyrate River Cleanup will take to the water April 25. Every year, the community service group known as the Blackwater Pyrates, puts boats in the Blackwater River and cleans up trash. Last year, the Pyrates collected in excess of 3,500 lbs of garbage from the river.

Pyrates’ founder Tom Scott said last year’s haul saw more tires than years before. “We know there are still a sizable number of them in the river, but the Pyrates have really put a dent in the problem,” he said.

The event falls in line with the Pyrates three-pronged mission of  river safety, cleaning the river, and historic preservation of the Blackwater. Current Captain Ralph “Dragon” Palmer said, “We Pyrates are passionate about what we do and want the public to understand our passion to give back to the communities of the Blackwater.”
