Update: Suspect dead after injuring SRSO deputy with sword

Update:

According to the SRSO Public Information Officer Rich Aloy, Deputy Matt Ray is doing well but it seems he may have a long recovery time. Aloy said Ray suffered injury to both arms and legs in the attack Thursday evening. Suspect Gordon Talmage Kimbrell, Jr., 22, Navarre,  died after being transported to the hospital after SRSO Sgt. Brian Miller shot him several times inorder to protect Ray. Reports said Miller is currently on administrative leave due to the ongoing investigation. He was not injured during the incident.

Aloy said Kimbrell was acting in a threatening manner to other occupants within the residence and attacked Ray after being told to put the weapon down several times.

A Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Deputy has sustained injuries from an attack with a “sword-like weapon,” according to reports.

According to the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 5:30 p.m. yesterday, deputies were dispatched to an address on Quail Roost Drive in Navarre and encountered an individual wielding the blade. The report said the individual struck a deputy with the sword causing serious injury at which point the assailant was shot multiple times.

Both the deputy and the suspect went to area hospitals and no condition by press time has been released. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is on scene. They will be conducting the investigation into the use of force. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting an administrative investigation into the incident as well.
