Saturday, Oops Alley in Pace was the place for SouthBark Animal Rescue’s Pool for Paws Extravaganza event. The American Poolplayers Association Santa Rosa County league hosted a benefit tournament afterwards and The Iguanas band made an appearance. Rounding out the event was a chili cook-off, raffle, and silent auction.
According to Debbie Day, on the fundraising committee for South Bark, as well as a volunteer and foster family, SouthBark took in a total of $1,650 and two dogs, Bam Bam and Bates, found their forever homes. Day said all of the money from the raffle, silent auction, vendor booths, and tourney fees went to the dogs. Day said SouthBark is “all volunteer based, no salary, no overhead. Everything goes to the care of the dogs.”
Day said, “The dogs that we rescue are the highest risk of being euthanized. Different rescues are maybe breed specific. We get the ones that are ‘last call.’ They’re the ones that are picked over.” SouthBark gets the dogs updated on shots, microchips them, and checks them for heart worms and either treats them or gives them preventative medicine, according to Day.
SouthBark’s upcoming events include more adoptions and low-cost microchipping events. “We are planning on the calendar for 2015, five microchip events.” One of those will be at the PetSmart in Pace on May 16. “It’s a wonderful community service event,” she said, at the cost of $20 for the microchip and lifetime registration.
