Milton High School senior Jayci Floyd continues to make her family proud by signing a track scholarship with Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
While Floyd made her athletic contributions to the school’s basketball, softball and volleyball teams, Floyd found success in track in which she had only been doing track for a short period of time.
“For someone to come out in January or February and throw for three and a half months and finish sixth in the state, that is an unbelievable accomplishment,” said Kelly Gillis, the MHS girls track team. “We are extremely happy to have her out there.”
In addition to helping the Lady Panthers win district in volleyball, Floyd is also on path on breaking a school record in track. The girls track season is currently underway
“My goal is to break the school record…I am pretty close,” Floyd said.
Floyd said she is working to beat the school’s record of 40.6 in shot put.
“I have done a 41 at practice and a 38 at a (track) meet,” she said. “I should get it, I just need to keep working toward it.”
Floyd said she was also surprise by the success she has found on the school’s track team.
“I wasn’t raised playing track. It turned out that it is was something I could go out and do and enjoy,” she said.
Gillis credited assistant coaches Astly Blackwell and Jarvis Williams with helping coach Floyd on the team. However, in addition to her athletic talent, Gillis attributes Floyd’s success to her work ethic. Not just in athletics but in the classroom, as well.
“Her work ethic is second to none,” he said. “She has put herself on a island…that’s an attribute to not just her athletic ability, but in the classroom as well. I know she is one of our scholar athletes.”
